I just noticed this little program over at Mobile Top Soft called (un-surprisingly!) Remote Tracker.
Created for the continued line of devices with GPS built in (Artemis, Kaiser, Diamond etc.) its a neat little application that will track your device using gps and using the program, will text an alternative number details of its location.
Now I have seen programs like this before, and have always thought them lacking due to the fact that all that needed to be done was a hard reset, however this is reported to survive a hard reset using certain registry values.
I'm not certain what they are but unless a thief is cunning enough to steal a windows mobile device, and then to subsequently be able to hard reset the device, and then know that it has this application on it, then I think there might be a good chance that this could work.
I have not tried it yet, as I am trying to get my device ready for repair, but I will be installing this when my Kaiser is ready. Hell I might even install it on my fiancée's Diamond just to freak her out once or twice, though I am not advocating for this program to be used just to spy on people!
Whatever your needs/usage for this application may be, more information can be found using the link above, or to just download the program follow the link here.
Don't forget to list your first impressions, problems, general opinions in the topic thread.
And best of all, don't forget, its FREE!!!!
Cheers

Did you know MoDaCo has a sister site? It's called Mobiholics, and it has recently relaunched with members 'tsutton' and 'Mark' at the helm.
It's the place to go for all non Windows Mobile related mobile talk - discussing networks, non WinMo devices etc. As part of the MoDaCo.network, your existing MoDaCo login automagically works over there too! Neat eh?
I'm pleased to announce a couple of new features on Mobiholics too! The first is a news page (much like MoDaCo), which can be found at the main http://www.Mobiholics.com URL. The can also subscribe to Mobiholics news with the RSS feed (I recommend the excellent and free 'Newsgator' suite!) Secondly, we are starting a new regular feature called '7 in 7 on Mobiholics'. This is a weekly MoDaCo post, just to bring your attention to 7 interesting posts from Mobiholics in the past week! Since this is the first one, the timescales have a bit of leeway, but keep watch for this as a regular feature from now on.
See you soon over at Mobiholics
Oh, and if you are interested in helping out on MH, I am sure tsutton or Mark would love to hear from you!

This weeks '7 in 7 on Mobiholics'

The guys over at HTC Class Action have come up with the first unofficial drivers for the qualcomm chipset that take advantage of the available hardware acceleration that until now have not been taken advantage of, and thus led to the creation of the class action. At the moment it is reported that these have only been tested on Duttys Diamond V1 ROM which is WM 6.1. If you want to see what it is about follow the link to their website here and install at your own risk. I for one will be backing my kaiser up before installing this update, and of course I will be reporting my findings afterwards. After receiving a new Diamond on Wednesday, and having it snatched back by the missus yesterday (it was kinda her phone upgrade anyway ) I am longing for the kind of performance that quite obviously can be achieved. If you decide to install it, or indeed have already done so please let us know. Cheers Phill

Roaming around the web as I do, I came across quite a startling post over on PocketGPSWorld:
QUOTE This is sure to cause a stir. A German court has ruled that a navigation application running on a Smartphone cannot be used whilst driving. Because the use of phones whilst driving is illegal, a court in Cologne has ruled that drivers using a satellite navigation system installed on a phone are infringing Section 23, Paragraph 1 of the German Highway Code. The full text can be read here (in German) and here translated although you should be aware that Google's translator misinterprets the German for driving as 'tax' because the German for 'steering wheel' and 'tax' are the same.
Is this just a case of German efficiency, or could the UK soon fall foul? Here's hoping our legal system doesn't take the law about operating a phone whilst driving too literally...
[Source]
EDIT: My other half just pointed out that if you took the sim out, it wouldn't technically be a phone...good thinking batman! |

Not rushed out and bought a Diamond (HTC P3700) yet? Not totally sold on it's angular design? Like the MDA Compact IV but not the T-Mo branding or the ugly, grey battery cover? Then allow me to introduce the HTC Victor (P3702)! Whilst it may be slightly bigger than the "original" Diamond, the P3702 has a few subtle differences:- Different stylus design
- Doesn't sit flat on a desk due to raised portion of battery cover
- Raised d-pad for greater ease of use
- Different button layout
- More "defined" design around the speaker
- Won't fit in the standard Diamond Brodit holder
...couple all that with what I consider to be a much nicer, curvier design and what appears to be a nice touchy-feely coating on the battery cover and you've got quite a device! I wasn't 100% sold on the standard Diamond design but this has certainly turned my head!
The Victor is out now in the Asian market but it's as yet unkown if it'll head to our shores. You can catch some pics of this puppy being unboxed HERE by "PDA-King". |

I've long since given up on trying to browse "any" site on my device (a QVGA Professional), and now I commonly just think "I'll do that on my laptop later". But, out of optimism more than expectation, I keep looking for a good solution and noticed news items this week that struck a cord.
Andy Lees talks up the next version of PIE
QUOTE According to Lees, the new Internet Explorer for Windows Mobile, announced earlier this year and scheduled for release in approximately six months, will be "the full IE 6, not a cut-down browser." Users will be able to run AJAX-based applications via IE that won't run on competing Apple, Nokia, or Google Android-based smartphones, he promised. Source So, coming soon is a WM version of software they [wanted to] replace on the desktop how long ago? I never even tried IE7 because I'd already gone to FF on my PC, but I keep a copy of IE6 for those sites that can't handle real standards.
IBM re-invent the wheel, but make it square
QUOTE "Highlight" is a Firefox-based plug-in that allows end users to script common tasks on sites and boil them down to super simple mini-sites that are more easily digested on mobile browsers, at which point the new sites are copied up to a proxy server. Source To be entirely honest I thought this was a joke at first. Basically, visit the site on your PC, hash some pages together and host them somewhere else for later viewing on your device. Er. That'd be a "no" from me.
Nielsen Mobile's "Critical Mass" survey
QUOTE The firm found that 82% of iPhone owners access the mobile internet, "making them five times as likely to do so as the average mobile consumer". Source According to this in the US 4% of users who access the web from their device use an iPhone, compared to 2% for the nearest WM device.
Box.net CEO sees more iPhone users
QUOTE The CEO of online collaboration startup Box.net has been watching the iPhone’s impact on his business, and he marvels at the results. Though there are millions more devices out there running Windows Mobile software from Microsoft (MSFT) and BlackBerry software from RIM, his usage logs show that iPhone users are already accessing his service through the Safari browser just as often as the other gadgets – suggesting that iPhone owners are more likely to actually use advanced Internet features. Source
OK, to summarise all that - - MS plan to give us a browser from 7 years ago, but not yet
- IBM want us to use a PC instead
- Nielsen see a clear growth in mobile internet access, partly driven by iPhone
- Web-services take up increase, partly driven by iPhone
In the same week that Windows Live guy announces his love for iPhone (source) I'm resisting the urge to send MS a "slap on the back of the head" by email.
I'm downloading Opera 9.51b1 now and hoping it's as good as people say.

We've been waiting a while, but the pending release of Opera 9.5 mobile browser beta has been delayed for a couple of days while they sort out "a couple of show stopping bugs".
Originally penned for release today July 15th it has now been put back to the 17th.
From Opera Mobile's blog page:
QUOTE(By fhauge @ Opera) Some things in life don't go according to plan -- at least not in software development. We knew when we announced a release date before we finished development that a showstopper bug might be found that could alter the actual date we release the beta.
As you can imagine, we encountered a few bugs last week that we needed to fix before we launch. Our engineering team worked through the weekend to fix the bugs. Even though our release is a beta, we'd rather spend the extra time to fix them, thus giving you a better experience. The fixes are almost complete now, but we need two more days to run the build through our quality assurance testing. The new launch date is now set for the 17th.
We're disappointed to delay, but fixing these bugs will improve the experience with our beta and let you fully test the browser. Ive been waiting a while for a proper version of this to come out for my Kaiser, so I am more than happy to wait a couple of days extra to have a beta version that has less bugs in it!
Stay tuned, as I am sure when it is released it will be a hot topic of discussion here!
Cheers
Phill

Now, i'm pretty sure i'm reading this right...
MoDaCo partners Mobiles.co.uk seems to be offering the very desirable HTC Touch Diamond for an impressive FREE on a Dolphin 35 (18 month) contract with Orange, which gives you 600 mins Any Network Anytime + Unlimited Texts. Now that seems decent in itself, but not only that, you also get £80 Auto Cashback or a FREE Jawbone Headset or 5 months FREE line rental or a FREE Nintendo DS Lite or a FREE Nintendo Wii Fit.
Is this the best deal around on the Diamond? I imagine so! Head on over for more details!
I should also point out that this is 'no redemption needed' cashback... unlike some other less reputable online stores!
P
Edit: Use promo code 'MVCJB' for a free jawbone headset too!
Edit 2: As this is a MoDaCo affiliate, all purchases using this link quality for a free 1 year subscription to MoDaCo Plus! Contact me after delivery to activate!

On my rounds of scouring the net for Windows Mobile related goodnessm I have come across this neat little application called 'Wi-Not mobile'.
I'm guessing from the name that it might be intended primarily for use over a Wifi network, however it seems ok on my Vario 3 on HSDPA.
QUOTE(From the Wi-Not Mobile Website) Wi-Not Mobile is a full-featured mobile based platform based on a set of innovative technologies and a distinct design approach. Wi-Not Mobile enriches the mobile device by adding several features like:
... Hundreds of popular TV channels from all over the world ... Hundreds of Radio stations from more than 30 countries ... Simple instant messaging with live translation ... Dedicated meta-search engine for unlimited mobile games... Mini embedded web browser ... Mobile server for file sharing and social networking ... Crawler for sound searching ... Uniq mobile shopping experience ... And fun never stops with Wi+ area It's not quoted above but on the website is that there are over 300 TV channels and 150 radio stations to choose from!
So far I have used the TV (which wasn't bad actually), but having only just found it I wanted to share it with you guys. I think in order for some of the features to work you have to have some pals already on it... so if there are any German, French or other non-English language speakers, you can test this to translate over IM, which does sound quite cool, if not actually any use to some people!
So go ahead and download the application from their website and tell us what you think.
Also if you feel brave enough add you username to the thread and see if we can use any of the social networking features. Ill let you guess mine if you want to add me!
Have fun!
Cheers

My secret sauce (sic) tells me that Asus have cancelled the launch of the upcoming ZX1 Lamborghini phone.
This is, I'm told, due to Asus wanting to ensure that more important devices scheduled for Q4 are released on time. Whilst it's no great loss, I'm sure I'm not the only one who was looking forward to having a play with one - but not at the £800 Expansys wanted for it! |
