All, again, true, but copy and paste and forwarding emails (and MMS if that's your bag) are all sorted via Cydia. It's a shame that Apple don't build these in and a real shame that they prohibit the use of the SDK to make real SatNav - it's the only reason ALK haven't released CoPilot yet Hmm, even if Apple allowed it, iPhone SatNav wouldn't fully tick the box for me. The last "proposal" I saw from ALK was a product that used server side mapping, just like Telmap & Telenav. That was for the Blackberry, but I would imagine it fits right into Apple's "charge for everything" policy too. They'd much rather do it that way, as it removes scope for piracy, and gives them a nice revenue stream by charging a monthly subscription. Clearly the Palm Pre will be the same, as Palm's marketing is focussing pretty much everything on the "cloud", they have already advertised a tie up with Telemap, and, like the iPhone, there's no external memory expansion available for maps. Same for the Blackberry too - there's a choice of at least 4 turn-by-turn products, and although 2 are free (aMaze and Nav4All), all the maps are held server side and downloaded as you go - even with Garmin. Now that approach is fine in that it promises you the latest maps and free traffic info etc., but just wait until you're in unknown territory out in the sticks and you can't get a data connection, and there's no way for it to tell you the way home (or it loses it mid-manoeuvre). Been there, done that, and almost thrown it out of the window. So although the basic functionality may there on other OS, if SatNav is one of your must-haves, WM and S60 definitely still have the advantage. This post has been edited by Metoo: Mar 7 2009, 18:02 |

I've never had a problem with the iPhone's keyboard <snip> I would hate to carry anything with a dull size keyboard The keyboard's good, but you wouldn't want a DULL one? One thing I've noticed with the E71 is that, even with the sometimes strange word suggestion, I almost never make a typo. I've also noticed that I send loads more text messages - largely because it's so easy to type on I now type "longhand" (few if any abbreviations) and I often ramble on for more than 160 characters. The big "loss" of going to S60 for me is the community - I don't come here often any more, and none of the S60 forums have the same community spirit that Modaco has always fostered. |

There you have a point - it's probably only the goings-on here and over at xda-dev that keep me interested in playing with WM! |

I've only just seen your reply - buy that typo was made on a DULL size keyboard I agree about the community spirit for WinMo, the iPhone community isn't the same. -------------------- He who asks a question looks foolish for 5 minutes. just thought I'd add my tuppence worth to this thread...
My 2 and a half year old managed to break my TYTN at the end of Feb. I was hoping to get a HD but couldn't justify the spend so my mrs bought me an e71 for my b'day. I have to say it is an excellent phone. No issues what so ever and Nokia Messaging is the dangly bits as far as I am concerned. As I'm on 3 I get 5k Skype minutes per month and it is AWESOME! proper skype application on the phone, FB, Youtube etc... I'm using Garmin XT for nav which isn't as good as Tom Tom but I can live with it. Google Maps is also very fast on this device. the aGPS is rally good. I've got no gripes whatsoever with this... I was wary about the move away from Winmo but to be honest if you are sensible about the apps you need and will use this is a great device... I don't really see any reason to go back to a winmo device now... though I do miss it... Maybe if there was a way to get winmo on the e71 you'd have the best phone out there... the battery life is amazing... I find myself charging the phone 'just in case' but the damn thing can go with out for ages! no complaints unfortuntatly but have to agree that there isn't really a strong 'community' for the e71/S60 peeps out there that I have found... I've yet to find anyone to video call with though... I have an app which lets you take photos with the forward facing cam which is good and at least proved the thing works... all the best see you on the next iteration of winmo S |
