Having used IBM compatible PC's for the past 20+ years when I saw a cheap MAC on eBay I decided to give it a go.
This is what I bought http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/APPLE-POWERMAC-G4-GR...id=p3911.c0.m14 He accepted £30 so for less than £50 inc P&P I now have a MAC. A nice man at work gave me a decent monitor for it as well I have downloaded and installed Live Messenger and apart from the fact the mouse lead is only about 2" long and it is taking some getting used to the way MAC OS works, I quite like it. Any ideas what I should install next or what I should do with it? I only bought it to see what MACs were like and really have no idea.... Cheers -------------------- He who asks a question looks foolish for 5 minutes. He who doesn't ask a question remains foolish forever.

If you have any interest in video editing or music, the Mac is really good for both of these (also good for imaging but you'll need to have a goatee for that For video editing, there's a software package called Final Cut which is very good. For music, try Sound Studio or Audacity which is free. If you're into emulation, try MacMAME or Sixty Force which is a Nintendo 64 emulator that plays very well on a PowerMac G4. If you want a decent torrent client (ahoy there shipmates), try Transmission or xTorrent that has an integrated search. Finally, for a cool application launcher, take a look at Quicksilver. I have recently been immersed in the world of macs and have come to the conclusion that they do everything just about OK - other than creative stuff which they totally excel at.
But if you live in any world other than a graphic design/video editting/music publsihing etc one, then they cannot compete with pc's. -------------------- Touch HD runnign Dutty's latest rom

Jimbo - that's basically what I've always thought, but for £50 I thought I'd try one, always interesting to see alternatives!

Ive just been keen to get into using mac's after having strong roots in Microsoft for many years. I found that I tried to use the MAC for everything I needed to ... and now Ive pretty much found what I need to do, or can suss out with a bit of google.
Office 2008 for the Mac is great, iLife is a nice toolset, Ive also been using Parallels and VMWare Fusion too. My advice would be, just get using it as much as possible, and enjoy it. -------------------- --

What's the difference between Leopard and Tiger? Is there a cheap upgrade? Is it worth it?
The MS Action pack doesn't seem to include MAC licences -------------------- He who asks a question looks foolish for 5 minutes. He who doesn't ask a question remains foolish forever.

Tiger is OSX 10.4.x
Leopard is OSX 10.5.x The next one is the much awaited Snow Leopard. I'm not totally familiar with the differences between them all, but I think that Leopard has much more in it than Tiger. -------------------- --

My most used apps are Adium (http://www.adiumx.com/) and of course Firefox... I have a bunch of great software on my mac, but don't know if they'll work on a G3?

Mine's a G4 not a G3....
I was wondering about FF - it's what I use on my PCs but is it the best on MACs? What about Safari? Thanks. -------------------- He who asks a question looks foolish for 5 minutes. He who doesn't ask a question remains foolish forever.

Yeah ... but it's still bearable, and I can find no other decent alternative!
