I recall a thread some time ago where the plan was to send a GPS enabled PDA / phone through the post / courier to see where it went.

I can't find the thread, so was wondering if anyone knew what happened to the plan.

Thought about it when I was sent this link

Would have thought it a bit of a non-starter. With a typical running time of just 2-3 hours, what GPS enabled PDA / phone would even make it to the local sorting office?
And if you were to beef it up with extra batteries etc., I bet the most likely method of transport to its final destination would be "controlled explosion"!

If I recall correctly, those issues were being discussed, and the experiment may have never happened because of such issues. It certainly sparked plenty of interest at the time

It kinda got put on the back-burner for a variety of reasons, mostly more pressing stuff that needed doing over the experiment! It's probably worth giving Paul a poke regarding it though, as we had all the necessary kit and packaging ready and all that was needed was a small app to periodically poll the GPS receiver and upload the location! The battery life issue would be worked around by using GSM only and hooking the device up to an external battery pack, that should in theory give a good 3-6 days standby (GPS access aside, of course).
