 Dissapointed in G1, Google and Email

Hi folks,

This is my first post, after reading the forums for a number of weeks I finally decided to register.

Just to update you folks, I purchased a G1 from T-Mobile two weeks back. In short the device I find is poor in terms of useability and email. It's dissapointing to find that with such power Google the company have in terms of programmers they could not even get the basics of email right and have created a flawed product where they feel will be tested in force by the end users.

I purchased my G1 in a store and due to T-Mobiles policy I can only exchange it for another phone but not cancel my contract, I was discussing UK trade laws with them that they cant sell something if it does not adhere to the basic goods act, however, they simply took no for an answer and asked me to go for a Nokia E61 or a Blackberry.

Coming from a windows touchphone and moving to the G1 has only been fraught with problems, the phone needs to be seriously tested, there is no point having apps that only cater for a small number of users. If you cant get your basics right that is phone and email now adays then you really dont have much leg to stand on.
Dont get me wrong the phone is great in terms of connecting to the internet, using Google maps and some other apps are great, however this has been a major downfall in terms of G1 being utilised by the business community. The business community will appreciate apps of course, but mainly we need email to be working as well, as more of us use email than browsing.

My final advice is that if you intend to purchase the G1, get over the phone and dont go into the stores as there is no way that you can cancel the contract. I wish I did this and now I'm wondering whether to move towards the Omina, Nokia E61 or the Blackberry.

What about a Touch Diamond, or possibly even a Touch HD, which should be out an about imminently?

You most certainly can return it, I suggest put into writing that you feel the device does not live up to your expectactions, and is not capable of providing the level of functions and service that t-mobile advertised the device having.
Give them a set time frame to respond in writing, then when that time frame has gone go speak to your local trading standards. If the device is not fit for it's intended purpose then you have every right to return it.

I feel you on the serious lack of attention paid to the actual software. Coming from the WM scene and then using something that I thought was going to be great really was disappointing to me as well. On the other hand we've been fortunate to be using the WM OS for years my first WM device was actually running CE and was a palmtop.

I expected more from Google, but the phone is still in it's infancy. iPhone users that moved from WM to the iPhone had almost the same complaints that we did going from a WM to the Google phone. I for one have decided to tough it out. I pretty much had to change the way I do things mainly due to the application deficit. However seeing as how the hardware is better then my old TYTN II I'm much happier. Sony did the same thing with all three of the playstations, they overhyped them and I only saw 30% of what they said they could do. Not too many people complained, maybe I'm just pickier.

I'm am sorry to hear that the Tmobile store is giving you the run around. I've had only good experiences with the company both retail and corporate. I'm sure that if you call the local corporate office they might be able to do something for you. The retail establishments rarely have the power to do anything nor do they always know what to do in your specific predicament.

. . .I kind of expected a bare bones OS/Phone but I was expecting to be able to at least use Google Docs. . . sad.gif cause now I have to lug my laptop around with me instead of my tiny phone. lol
