Looking to get a new PC. I have a desktop (Sony Viao 2.8Ghz) but I need my personal PC to be more mobile.
Was considering a TabletPC instead of a Laptop. ANyone have any experience with these? The notion of them is kind of cool, only if I can have a docking station with keyboard at home, if needed. -------------------- |

I have a TC1000 and I will never go back to a regular laptop. I am writing a story for another website that discussed the changes made in Lonestar. This new version will allow must if not all current applications to be ink enabled. By a simple process that does not require touching one line of code. Anyway the owner of this site does not like other sites links posted so search the web next month, looking for a new Tablet PC site

You can link non-smartphone sites.

Well in that case keep your eyes for a new site to hopefully launch on Monday, However the information will not be posted until mid-month or so.

I have been using a Fujitsu-Siemens slate-style Tablet PC.
Although it's 'OK', i'd definitely not buy a Tablet unless it was convertible (i.e. had a keyboard). P -------------------- ![]() |

Thanks for the responses. I'll check out the new site next week.
And yes....convertable is a must...or at least a docking station...for the days when a keyboard in absolutely necessary. -------------------- |

I also have a TC1000 and use a lot here at uni. The TC1000 is a 'hybrid' - it has a detachable keyboard so can be either a slate or convertable, although I usually use it without the keyboard attached, as I have a proper keyboard plugged into the dock. I find it very useful for making notes and do all my uni work on it. Only problem with the TC1000 is that it is a bit slow, although it can be upgraded, and the new TC1100 is supposed to be a lot faster. It's also quite expensive with all the accessories (dock, dvd etc).
I certainly wouldn't want to go back to a laptop after using a tablet pc though. Andy -------------------- "If you are intelligent enough to get Linux running on your computer, why in the name of all that's holy would you want to use AOL?"

I work for a Compaq reseller and have had several different iterations of the Tablet PC before they decided on the TC1000 model.
I think it's the hottest thing on the market. The greatest add-on you can get for it will be Office 2003, because it has some features and programs that only enhance its startling capabilities. However, I do have a down note for you. I am particularly displeased with the screen size. I guess I'm being picky but I like a slightly bigger screen on my laptops. Old age comes early I suppose.. :-) |

Old age comes early I suppose.. :-) Yes that is one downer for the platform. All the screens seem to be 10" or 12". But that isn't a deal breaker for me. Also, other than Compaq/HP...they are all brand names that I wouldnt have considered in the past. I'll let you know what I decide on. Have to see how much cash is left after my Christmas Shopping. -------------------- |

Just a note on the Compaq TC1000, it's horribly slow at loading apps because of the transmeta CPU (has to do weird code morphing stuff as it loads things). For me, that means it's limited to being a presentation and meeting PC. It's worth noting that it's fantastic for that purpose. I've never been so organised with my notes!
Someone said that it was upgradeable? I'm not aware of any upgrades to make it go faster? Other than ditching it and getting the tc1100 instead?! |

You can always upgrade the RAM to 768Mb or the hard disk to a 7200RPM model, both of which cause a significant speed increase (according to members of tabletpcbuzz.com).
While it is quite slow, I wouldn't go so far as saying it is horribly slow. Are you using the latest Nvidia drivers (with necessary modifications), or the old/slow Compaq ones? The latest drivers make quite a difference in general speed.
