Ok, so I know that there are legions of devoted WinMo users in the world, and the WM5 platform is a fairly stable base for a wide range of devices nowadays. However, I'm watching the live updates to the Engadget and TUAW.com web logs as Steve Jobs makes his keynote speech... And what's he talking about (and demoing for the first time)?

The iPhone.

I have to say, I really don't like Apple stuff very much (mostly from having to use Apple kit day in day out, and I'm a Windows person!) but this iPhone... It's something else.

I really wouldn't mind having one, but the sane part of me is still saying no because it's reliant on that good old package of iTunes and other Mac apps for its synchronisation suite / management apps... The phone looks just gorgeous though, and - and I say this with a touch of jealousy! - on first glance it blows pretty much nearly all WinMo and Symbian smartphones RIGHT out of the water.

So, do you think the iPhone is the death knell for the WinMo-based smartphone industry? can Microsoft pull something out of its hat and work with OEMs to produce an iPhone beater in the next 12 months? I sincerely hope so, I'm getting worrying thoughts about my Hermes possibly being the last WinMo smartphone I buy for a good long while, and I'm REALLY not a Mac person. That phone is just too tasty for words, and wait until you all see what it can do.

I know many people will just put their heads in the sand or outright refuse to even acknowledge its existence, but there comes a time when we have to realise that our phones, well, they're a bit inferier when compared against the iPhone. I've only read what's been written on Engadget and TUAW (they're doing minute by minute updates as Jobs makes his keynote, and they're including photos from the presentation too) - this is really going to change the balance of power in the industry from what I can see.

How are the WinMo and Symbian smartphone industries going to reply to Apple's offering? I'm really getting worried.

If it ends up looking like the photos and lasting more than five seconds on battery I want one.

A phone completely based on a touch screen? Hmmm...
How tedious it must be to write an e-mail/text message on that thing.

And my god people it syncs with iTunes!
/me hates iTunes

I love my iPod but I think there is a reason M$ dont make their own phones.

Not so much as the iPhone but the iPocketPCPhone?

Some nice touches here and there, but isn't this the Mac take on a Pocket PC smartphone. Ok'd we love the on-board memory, the accelerometer is a nice trick...but I thought the 3.5" screen form fact was dead and buried?

Or are we seeing the birth of a whole new breed of Smartphone here?

It runs OS10.

Full OS10.

Er, wow. Even I was VERY impressed by that (after the initial bout of disbelief).

Widescreen display... Built in speaker... Oh man, how COOL would that look in your hand.

It's killing me inside, because it's Apple :X (and I am on a one-man mission to avoid buying ANYTHING Apple at all cost). Steve Jobs wasn't far off the mark when he said in his keynote that this phone is "five years ahead of anything else," it's truly an astounding piece of hardware.

I'm impressed by some of the features, but how the hell is a 2G device with a 2MP camera 5 years ahead of what's around today?

Where does it say full OSX? What from full OSX is included?

In a nutshell, it ain't possible. That'd be like trying to put XP or Vista on a Universal.

But 'My Universal runs Windows'... if you get what i'm saying.
