Has modaco become Modacomnia?

Does no one use any other device ? Or is it just that the Omnia is so bad?

Lol - no because it is seriously popular!!! A lot of carriers are facing stock problems because it is so popular. Also the fact that the community is not split between xda-developers and modaco (which I find happens with the HTC phones) has something to do with it as well....

BTW it is a damned good phone (but still gonna get an Xperia X1 though!)

Yeah I've been thinking the same thing for the past week or so with 9 out of 10 posts being Omnia related! biggrin.gif I agree though, seriously good phone - particularly with the TouchFLO 2D installed.

And there's Confucious with his Omnia wannabe the iphone tongue.gif

It's worrying that so many people are jumping on the "lets upgrade the ROM" waggon without knowing what it actually involves and then posting the phone will not turn on etc. I know some ROMs can improve battery life etc but for inexperienced users more caution should be taken.

I think the two above raised points are right - it's a massively popular device with a huge marketing push, and there's not the fragmentation we see on HTC devices now between here and XDA-Devs.

When I joined MoDaCo it was when the Kaiser was launched, and that was the only thing that was posted. Then it went mad on BlackJack devices and BJ II's. Of course there was increased traffic when the Diamond and Raphael were released. But I think the Omnia has caused quite a stir. Mainly because it is the first real WinMo device that could be totally mainstream. Other winmo devices are usually snapped up by techies with a need for such a device. The omnia is being used by Orange, T-Mo and Vodafone as their iPhone alternative. Same form factor, internet on the go, email on the go, decent camera and touch screen.

Hence a lot of non-techies are buying the device and then keen to see what it offers.

Agreed that too many people seem to be messing about with ROMS and even simple apps and skins without knowing what they are doing.

My advice to those people would be:

1. If you dont know what you are doing just dont do it
2. Find all the stuff that came in the box
3. Repackage the device with all accessories
4. Send it back to your supplier
5. get a Nokia

I think the ROM cooking community is what's driving the Omnia's online popularity. Obviously the iPhone similarities and marketing push have helped with the devices penetration into the customer-base, but those more technically orientated owners who have come online for more info, help and options for getting the most out of their device have found several havens of information in our communities.

I'd say it works both ways, and came together nicely for Samsung with the Omnia!

ROM Cooking? Aren't they all Samsung ROMS? If so then what's driving the community seems to be the shear number of new ROMS (and the ridiculous naming convention!)
The iPhone doesn't have lots of ROMs it just works (apart from mine, off course, but I'm working on it wink.gif )
If people are cooking ROMs then great - but if they are all Samsung's then there must be a heck of a lot of bugs to need so many 'fixes'!

^yes, its not cooked roms, its all samsung "released" roms, but not officially released, the latest rom is around 4 roms ahead of the current officially released samsung rom.

im happy that i found a lot of omnia users here in modaco, my regular "home" forum on my country, all i see is iPhone this iPod touch that, we only have 2 or even 3 omnia users on that forum, i felt so left out, until i saw modaco.

which makes me ask, why the h3ll is omnia very popular in europe, not on my country, and my friends in US doesnt even know what omnia is? i can only guess that its because of Orange, T-Mo and Vodafone and their push to sell omnia.

Well, there isn't any other new exciting windows mobile device that is available on most of the uk carriers (don't think 3 have it...)... the Diamond is the only other device and that is sooooo 6 months ago.

Combine that with the fact that XDA-Developers would rather start a fundamentalist religious war than open a forum for the device, and Paul's helpful and tireless work to support the device means that MoDaComnia is the place to be for it.

Oh dear! I see Paul has now cooked an Omnia ROM - no doubt the Omnia posts will now increase.

Luckily the iPhone just works so I don't need constant ROM updates......

iPhone works does it?

how about going back in the safari browser?

displaying flash content?

using a song from iTunes as a ringtone?

cut and paste?

turn by turn gps?

sending mms?

recording video?

changing the battery?

browsing files on a computer over the internet? (HSDPA, wifi, 3g etc)

Using the device as a bluetooth mouse and keyboard?

as with all iPhone users... im sure you will have an answer for ALL of these points biggrin.gif

It has it's faults. Not sure what you mean by 'how about going back in the safari browser?' - i just press the back arrow which seems to work...

MMS and video are easily fixed.

I really miss 'turn by turn gps' - and BT (you missed stereo headphones) and lack of cut and paste is a bit of a pain.

I didn't say it was perfect but most of the Omnia ROMS seem to be fixing fairly major bugs.

My iPhone is still just an i at the moment but I have wifi access at home and work - hopefully I'll get the phone bit working soon - but that's my problem. With the addition of turn by turn GPS I think I could quite get to like the iPhone.
