Ever since the advent of 2.0 and iPhone Applications....my iPhone Syncs now take at least 2 hours to complete because iTunes backs up the entire phone EVERYTIME. This includes saved application data and text messages, etc. (Your sync time may vary depending on how much data and how many applications you have installed). This usually deters me from even plugging my iPhone into my computer!

Now you can avoid the whole backup process and JUST SYNC thanks to the fine developer(s) at twelvepin.com.

There you can download (Mac Only) a FREE (throw 'em a donation if you want) little app that disables the backup process whenever you want to just sync before running out the door. Thanks Twelvepin! (Sincere!) Thanks Apple! (Sarcastic!)

A Sideways slide to web action

Being Deaf myself, I keep my eyes out for a good mobile phone that are more suitable for Deaf/Hard of Hearing people like vibrating when there's a new email or text message arrives and that sort of thing.

I came across this review of this T-Mobile Sidekick Slide and thought I'd share this with you.

QUOTE(Disability Now)
The new Motorola Sidekick Slide is said to be ideal for deaf users. Jamie Trounce tried it out.

My first impression of the Motorola Sidekick Slide was that it looks like the Nokia N-Gage, or even a hand-held games console. It’s designed to be held horizontally (landscape), rather than vertically (portrait), and it slides open to reveal a full QWERTY keyboard – hence the name.

It is a really well-built handset, and feels strong and solid in the hand, and the slider itself is strong without being overly resistant.

The keyboard buttons are small but not too small, while the main buttons are quite big and easy to use. The menus are navigated by use of a rolling “trackball”, making it very accessible for most people.

There's more to read at this link.

The only bad thing about this phone is the poor quality camera and the controls are a little complicated. But from what I can read, it's a good phone for Deaf and Hard of Hearing people.

Anyone using this phone? What do you think of this?

In response to the rapidly growing name-brand MVNO market, Asda Mobile are to slash their call and text prices from 1st September.

Reported in The Times, the move is set to have their call rates while other networks are doing the opposite! Asda confirmed that they will be cutting their flat-rate calls from 16p to 8p, and texts from 5p to 4p. Asda currently has around 150,000 mobile customers, and are pitching themselves as the cheapest of all the MVNO networks.

An Asda Mobile SIM will set you back £2.48 from the Asda Mobile site, and you can of course port existing numbers.

paidContent is reporting that Virgin Mobile are to finally introduce proper Mobile Data, with the launch of Laptop orientated Mobile Broadband plans later this year.

The move, set to hit in Q4 this year, is a definite late entry compared to the other networks, but has been driven by an agreement with MVNO backbone provider T-Mobile to reduce the wholesale rates paid for voice and data. This should also allow Virgin to lower their normal Mobile Data tariffs.

As more networks enter the Mobile Broadband space, this can only serve to drive down prices, which is definitely a good thing!.

We'll be watching with interest...

3 have bumped their mobile broadband bundled laptop from the HP 530 to the higher spec HP 550!

Detailed here on the 3 site, the new 550 model - which is included without a cost bump over the previous model - features:
  • Intel Core 2 Duo Processor
  • 1GB RAM
  • 120GB Hard Disk
  • Windows Vista Home Basic
  • 15.4" WXGA bright view display
My pick of the bundles is the HP 550 + black E169 18 month 5GB / £35 p/m... with a total term cost of £630.

Arguably the overall term cost is still slightly too high, but I know the machines are selling like hot cakes to those who are looking for a laptop and broadband with a small up front investment. Thoughts?

I read a short article in Landmobile which talks about a new "globally-recognized" standard for emergency workers searching for next-of-kin contact information.

QUOTE
Emergency workers searching for next-of-kin information for an injured person now have a globally recognised way of doing so, through a new standard from the ITU. Simply prefixing 01, 02, 03 and so on to a nominated contact, such as '01father', '02wife' or '03husband' written in any script in the mobile telephone directory will enable emergency workers in any part of the world to identify contacts in order of priority and notify them

In some English-speaking countries , 'In Case of Emergency' - or ICE - has emerged, encouraging the public to list emergency contact numbers in their mobile phone in the form of 'ICE father', for example, or 'ICE doctor'. However, helpers who do not use or recognize the Roman script may not recognize the term.Now the ITU will work with the non-profit organization ICE4SAFETY to promote the new method of identifying emergency contacts.

The new standard, which is a clause to the ITU-T Recommendation E.123, internationalizes the ICE concept and recommends the use of Arabic numerals (0 to 9) to denote emergency contact numbers in a handsets directory. It exploits the fact that even though written scripts differ around the world these digits are universally recognized, making it usable by anyone, regardless of language or script.

For more information see www.ice4safety.com

Now, I have to say I was never a fan of "ICE" in the first place - I can't see your average ambulance driver bothering when they have a patient to deal with, quite apart from the fact that they might not want to be seen to be "riffling through the victims pockets".

This new system doesn't seem to improve things either.

Adding a zero-based prefix to an existing contact is fine, but you'd need to rename "Joanne Bloggs" to "01 wife" which would be counter-intuitive when you're trying to dial them, which would happen much more often than a paramedic searching (hopefully!).

So, instead you could create a new contact called "01 wife", for example, with all the same information as "Joanne Bloggs". But now, when they send you a text or call you it appears to be from "01 wife" which isn't too confusing (again, hopefully!), but it's not the behaviour I want from my phone. On top of that, I now have 2 contacts to manage whenever the missus changes her phone numbers.

If they'd chosen a prefix which would put the new contact at the END of the ponebook list, instead of at the begining, it would solve the incoming call/message issue of a duplicate contact. That still leaves us to manage the duplicate info though.

I can see a lot of people doing this, but I can also see a lot of people who are heavy mobile users NOT doing it because, lets face it, it's a bodge. I don't think it matters that some will and some won't, but if universality is not important why bother with a new standard?

I still think, if it's serious enough to involve somebody examining your mobile in search of next of kin info, there are plenty of other places they can get information from that "they" would turn to first.

Any ambulance drivers, police men, firemen (or women) care to comment? Or perhaps anyone who's needed emergency aid in a foreign country (how long did they spend playing with your mobile?)

The new Android SDK recently released by Google shows quite a few notable changes to the OS

The UI has been changed to what hopefully will be a more intuitive touch friendly experience.

Engadget says the homescreen is now flickable, and there's a convenient tab to pull up the apps list.

Also a few really cool features including contact syncing (hopefully from outlook...since we're all used to it).

Overall, it looks like the UI is much faster, and cleaner looking, and at version 0.9 it doesn't seem this thing will be in beta much longer!

Head over to engadget for a video and full picture gallary!

T-Mobile to Offer First Phone With Google Software

It seems that T-Mobile will be the first carrier to offer a mobile phone powered by Google’s Android software.

QUOTE(NYTimes)
T-Mobile will be the first carrier to offer a mobile phone powered by Google’s Android software, according to people briefed on the company’s plans. The phone will be made by HTC, one of the largest makers of mobile phones in the world, and is expected to go on sale in the United States before Christmas, perhaps as early as October.

Could this be the start of a mobile phone war just like we see with Microsoft and Apple for operating system?

What are your thoughts on the Android mobile phone?

StopCall Freeware For Symbian Based Devices

A review of StopCall for the Symbian S60 (3rd Edition). This application allows you to input numbers they would like ignored and when that number calls the user receives a busy tone rather than a ringtone.

QUOTE(MobileTopSoftware)
This is a great plus if you want to ignore calls during a meeting, or if you are attempting to block voicemails from being entered since the program goes to a busy tone rather than voicemail.

Like I said, its a simple program, but it works, it blocked my work phone number when I attempted to try out the program and that number is a toll-free number meaning although the program is simple it works as described.

Has anyone used this software?

Seems that Orange has decided not to release a new Access Linux mobile phone.

And there has been a talk that the powerful Google Android might have killed it off before it's even to be launched!

QUOTE(jkOnTheRun)
Orange is killing its plan to release a phone this year based on Access Linux and wonders if this is a sign that Mobile Linux is in trouble. I think outside of Asia that Linux-based phones are indeed going to be rare as phones running Google's Android are nearing release. One of the problems that seems to escape us is that there are often so many flavors of open sourced platforms and this prevents a de facto standard, which should be the biggest benefit of open source solutions. It doesn't matter if a platform is open source if it's totally different (and incompatible) with other like open sourced platforms.

Is the mobile's operating system hotting up? Who is going to win the war to get the OS installed on handsets?

What? An environmentally friendy mobile phone?

The Samsung E200 Eco's whole case is environmentally friendy as it is made from corn-derived. In other words, it's bioplastic.

Awesome!

QUOTE(CrunchGear)
Do you have eco guilt? That is, are you anxious that the planet is slowly dying like in every JRPG ever because of human activity? If that’s the case then Samsung has a phone for you. The E200 Eco is the company’s latest “eco-friendly” cellphone. What makes it so friendly to the environment is that its outer case is made out of bioplastic, a material that’s derived from corn.

Here's a quick rundown on the spec:

* 1.3-megapixel Camera
* Video messaging capabilities
* MP3 player
* Slider mechanism
* Bluetooth streaming

A very basic phone, but is a MUST HAVE for ecogeeks! biggrin.gif I wonder if the case is edible... ?
