The European Parliament is to vote next spring on whether roaming costs for text messages should be capped. The cost of sending a message is expected to eventually fall by 60% from an average of 23 pence to 9p.

Voice calls would fall from 36p to 27p a minute and customers would be able to set limits on data downloads.

A reluctant mobile phone industry first had limits on its roaming charges imposed by the EU in September 2007. However, those applied only to voice calls, not those for texting or browsing the internet while users were abroad.

O2 Germany today announced it has launched parts of its EDGE network in Southern Germany. According to O2 Germany's press release, today 700 sites went live and provides EDGE instead of GPRS if a customer is out of UMTS coverage.

In the next days, EDGE is planned to go live in other regions as well. Until end of this year, O2 Germany plans to have more than 4500 sites EDGE enabled which basically means that O2 customers can expect a bandwidth increase from today's 53 Kbps (with GPRS) up to 236 Kbps (with EDGE).

According to DSL Reports, Verizon Wireless has been quietly ending their SMS delivery confirmations. You know those quick icon changes (letter D or a green checkmark) that occur when your text message has been delivered to your recipient; well, they’re suddenly not working anymore. Discontinuation of the service reportedly started on September 9th on a regional basis and all regions should see the service gone by the end September. According to the word on the forums, the service was stopped in order to reduce network traffic.

I have to say the phone looks a little smaller than I would have first thought, then again this “google spy” as he is referred to via the link could just have overly large man hands. I have to think that these are the most clear “in the wild” shots we have seen yet.
