You're welcome. At 329 it's a bargain and probably a loss leader.

Heh I got fed up with looking at the machine for months and finally decided to go for it so no worries about the price drop.

I've got a 2gig stick from crucial coming today for it. Irony would have it that cost is £20 biggrin.gif

Does it come with home basic or home premium, the pcworld website is a bit ambigous about this, says home basic then goes on to describe media centre and mentions that it has home premium.

This is a great machine. I bought it yesterday for 350. There is an online coupon '5weekend' which will get you 5% off but you'lll still have to pay delivery and hence the total saving is only 11-12 quid. Currys had the machine on for 329 a little while back so I'm kicking myself a little for not buying it then.

You're going to really love me for this, but its on offer at PC world again, £329.99. linky
Thanks for the mini review, just what I was after.

Click through the link on what games MAc owners are playing and look at the first in the list. Also Amazon even helpfully provide you with a link just in case you really meant to search for "PC Game" instead of "Mac Game", now is that because they think PC owners are a bit thick or that Mac owners should really know better than to search for games? laugh.gif

That is nice, but would be ideal if OSX ran on it...

Would for me but not my wife, prefers Windows I suppose.

I have the model prior to this. Have had no problems. Excellent screen, very bright and clear. Good keyboard and build quality. Battery average and a little slow to boot up. WiFi very good. Volume of speakers could be a little higher but maybe I'm being a little picky. All in all I'm very happy with it especially the compact size, build quality and lovely screen. Hope this helps smile.gif

What were the specs of the previous version? Slow boot might not be such a problem if it sleeps and hibernates properly.

Was in PCWorld on sunday picking up a computer desk for my wife when she spotted this on the shelf. Does anyone have any experience on one? I must say it did look very nice, just not so sure about the processor - dual core pentium T2390 - seemed to be nippy enough though.

Veggycar: Why don't you reinstall without formatting the harddrive and allow OSX to archive the previous installation. You should be able to get at your work that way, then delete the archived installation when you've finished. Assuming there's enough harddrive space left on the 4221 to allow this of course.

After more hunting and reading reviews etc the Olympus 520 has caught my eye with the four thirds lens mount system. This could save me money as such as technically the focal length of lenses are doubled compared to a standard 35mm, so a 100 macro technically becomes 200.

Technically its the field of view that changes, not the focal length. My boss did a comparison between his full frame canon film camera and his 30D a few weeks ago using identical lenses on each. What he saw through the view finder on each did not make the subject seem larger or smaller in either camera, the real difference was that with the full frame camera he was able to see more at the edges of the scene. Of course printing out the images on the same size paper makes it look as if there is more telephoto magnification from the 1.6x 30D sensor, but the same effect can be achieved by enlarging the centre portion of the full frame image before printing.

The iPhone Dev team have finally released their latest version of pwnage for the iPhone, this will jailbreak and unlock all original iPhones and jailbreak the iPhone 3G or iPod touch and allow them to run V2.0 firmware. There's more info and download links at
the dev team blog
or if you want to jump in here's a link to the pwnage tool (mac only so if you don't have access to one you'll have to wait for winpwn).
http://rapidshare.com/files/131066175/PwnageTool_2.0.zip

You'll also need to get the 3.9 and 4.6 bootloaders for this to work but I can't link to them as they belong to Apple.

yeah, that $199.99 price is awesome...but what about that extra $10 just for the DATA? $30 bucks...over 2-year's time, that adds to a whopping $720 bucks, JUST FOR DATA! Add in the price of your actual plan, and were talkin THOUSANDS here. But hey, I still may get one. smile.gif

-hagie92

That's something you need to take up with AT&T, the jump to 3G in the UK is not an additional extra as standard, do AT&T charge extra for 3G (as opposed to EDGE) data plans with other phones?

EDIT: Just read an article on Macworld which would seem to suggest that all 3G phones on AT&T get hit for $30 a month, so there goes the justification for that complaint. Why would they give out data plans on a iPhone that are better than for their other 3G phones?

EDIT2: Just verifying on the AT&T website that other phones do actually have the $30 a month charge and it would appear that they do, looking at the tilt package and deals page it would appear that you can't even buy one without the data plan! Seems to be a strange way of doing business, coming from a country that will allow you to pay for GPRS/3G data on an as you use it basis if you don't think you'll need very much.

But, apple will probably try and sting the UK market, and I think the $199 was with some form of contract...

I'd imagine that the PAYG versions will come in at around £200 and £260, but that's only a guess. As I posted earlier the 8G can be had for free on £45 and £75 contracts and come in at the target $199/£99 on £30 and £35 contracts. The 16G iphone is £60 more expensive (and only free on the £75pm contract), but worth the extra in my opinion

Hope battery performance improves, the one on the original iPhone was cack and this new version is 3G enabled with GPS ohmy.gif

Well Apple are quoting 300 Hours standby, 5 hours talk/data on 3G (10 hours talk on 2g, so its probably selectable), 6 hours WiFi browsing, 7 hours video playback or 24 hours audio playback. No mention of the length of time that the GPS can be used for, but most people would probably be using the GPS in their cars and that's what in-car chargers are for.
I actually have the first gen 16G iPhone and compared to most PDA style phones I've used in the past the battery life is great, like any phone that does more than just make a call the battery isn't going to last more than a day or two if you use it and have the screen on all the time. Even phones from well established manufacturers can have problems with battery life when you stick a camera, mp3 player and web browser on them, the Nokia N95 was supposed to be terrible for battery life (I don't know this myself since I've never had one).

Looks like I took too long looking at the tarrifs and didn't hit refresh before editing it. Still looks like a reasonable deal on the £35pm tarrif, unlimited data and WiFi with a reasonable voice and text allowance. And the new 3G iPhone is exchange compatible and has a GPS built-in with (supposedly) smooth hand over between cell tower, wifi and GPS location abilities. If microsoft (or more likely open office) get in the game and release some office software through the app store this could turn a reasonably good phone into a great one.

O2 have just updated their website after last night's announcement of the 3G iPhone. No prices as yet but they're saying its coming to PAYG and can be had for free on certain pay monthly tarrifs (again it doesn't say which ones). Looks like Apple have finally come to their senses as far as the European market is concerned. I guess they expect to make a lot of revenue from the App store now, so carrier deals are not so important to them any more.

EDIT:Just had a better look at the monthly tarrifs and done a copy and paste below. The £35 a month deal is looking not to bad in my opinion.

Monthly Charge £30 £35 £45 £75
Cost of 8GB iPhone £99 £99 Free Free
Cost of 16GB iPhone £159 £159 £59 Free
Minutes 75 600 1200 3000
Texts 125 500 500 500
Unlimited Data & Wi-Fi Yes Yes Yes Yes
Visual Voicemail Yes Yes Yes Yes
Reduced Roaming Rates Yes Yes Yes Yes
Minimum contract length 18 months

Looks like a great deal, I wonder how long it will take for the other operators to react and offer something similar?

Have you checked to see if there are any locale settings in the Linux setups that you can adjust for the wireless setup? Channel 13 is legal to use in the UK but not in the states (only goes to channel 11 if I recall correctly). Its possible that Xandros and eebuntu think you are in the US and just won't attempt to use Channel 13 at all.

Ah, yes.
Voting is officially closed. Graham Norton will be announcing the result on TV later, but for Modaco members...

"Little Egg" is actually Owen Joseph.

We're expecting our 3rd (and final) this summer, so I might start a new poll. biggrin.gif

How's about Hammond (Egg)?

I think there are 2 very different markets here, most of the the issues these people have are very specific to what has been produced for a specific reason on the WM platform. If there were a way to see actively how many people control their phone via voice recognition etc I am sure it would be only 10% or so of WM owners. Where as the additional usability of the browser and email and media functions of the iPhone is something that appeals to the masses. It is unlikely that Apple will ever produce a device that caters to the hardcore WM owner but I after 5 years of using and owning WM devices am now an iPhone convert. I have had the iPhone since it launched in UK in Novenber and it is mind blowingly user friendly and miles better than any WM device I have ever used for the standard functions. Phone, email, calendar, media etc are all a dream to use and tbh this is exactly the same on a mac compared to a windows PC. I made the sw
