Can anyone enlighten me?

The 120kbps restriction ?

120kbps as in 15k/sec (68 seconds a megabyte) or as in 120k/sec (10 seconds for a megabyte)?

Thanks

As in around 1/3 of normal 3g (not HSDPA) speed.

do O2 have an unlimited bundle?

Yes. the FUP was removed a few months ago I believe.
They have an excessive use policy that does not have a stated limit - I think as long as you are not tethering etc it is unlimited. (Internet use on your phone only.....)

Best they seem to be able to offer me is one of the new panther tariffs that include 250MB, at £5 less than listed price. They are resolutely saying that there is no way to extend the OWB package, even though two CS reps told me it already had been extended.

Looks like I might be off... TMob or Three I reckon, as they seem to be the only ones offering sensible data deals.
I was repeatedly told that mine could not be extended. Hence I am now with o2.

I understand the difference, i was merely answering two of your points, one the speed is not restricted to 120kbps and the fact that I have downloaded 200mb in a day indicates a faster speed than 120kbs, which means it is possible to go over that amount also in a month quite easily.

I understand that my data usage is very heavy, but it just goes to shows that it is completely unrestricted on o2

Mark,

Is this on a consumer tariff/SIM? Did you need to get anything activated on your account - if so what specifically?

As you may have seen, a number of us do appear to be restricted to the 120kbs (despite trying at various different times in various excellent reception areas.)

Anyone know what the various O2 data connections are for?

On my new Stellar, I seem to have
Mobile web - under My ISP
and
O2 Active under My Work network

I only seem to use the mobile web one.

They do this regularly - they just never do anything about it!

Thats what I said the to retentions guy.

It was all very pleasant - I was not trying to bargain a better deal out of him and he fully understood why I was going and we both understood that there was nothing available to him to offer me that would come close to keeping me.

Oh well. C'mon O2 and Vodafone, fight for my custom!

Just got off the phone to Orange - given my 30 notice now - and they guy fully understands and tells me that although it is no good to me, they have only just had an internal newsletter saying that the data tariffs are being reviewed against the competition. He said himself that this was very much overdue and that when he left there he would be doingt he same as me (playing off teh networks for a good deal)

Shame as have been with Orange for 10 years.

What adjustments are these? Also i'd be surprised if any network manages to make such changes "over night" wink.gif

There are stories on the BBC and The register (yeah I know) about Ofcom consulting on taking back and reselling on some of the spectrum that it gave out in the 80s to Vodafone and O2 for free but on condition that it developed services. This stuff is currently restricted to 2G, and they want to open it up but via selling it. Am not very technically aware about all this, but I think that was the gist of it. I think the consultation ended at end of november 2007. I think tesco mobile was up in arms cos it was that bit that they used on O2.

As I am probably going to change to one of these two networks next month, does anyone have any views as to whether the proposed adjustments to the 2G spectrum that impacts upon Vodafone and O2 is something I need be concerned about? If so, do we know what the likely timescales are? (Don;t want to sign up for 18 months to find the network turns poor overnight.

Am no expert I am afraid.

I currently pay £53pcm and get

900 minutes
200 texts
Orangecare
Unlimited internet (1G FUP)

Changing that last item to the 30mb budle when my contract expires is a no go for me, so will be off to get the others to fight for my custom....(I could make do with 100mb say).

If that is the old Orange World wap package that someone was talking about over on Modaco then it may be worth more than it seems if you intend ever using data.....(they are using the wap apn to get loads of data)

O CS confirmed I cannot extend my data bundle and would need to switch to the extremely limited unlimited bundle. O2 here I come I think, but will have to wait till Jan/Feb.
(But I feel the need for a new phone now!)

as I am now concerned that my owb will vanish at the end of my contract,I thought I would see what the other networks have to offer. good to see that on 18 month contract for pretty much the same price I pay now and for pretty much the same minutes and texts I can get a kaiser free from vodafone and o2. difference is the 120 mb and 200 mb fups. so would anyone care to comment on network performance of these two. do o2 have hsdpa? vodafone said they did and I could have it. thoughts welcome.

Not much better for data then! Personally i'm on 3 with their £5/1GB X-series bundle. Works great!

Generally I am not a big data user, and could cope with a 100meg fup i suppose, but not 30 meg.!

Not sure about 3 - have not heard great things about coverage etc.

How do you find them?

I don't know about that. Probably best to check Orange's small print and the Sales of Goods act wink.gif

From memory if they varied the terms so that it significantly disadvantged the other party then you could break the contract.
Removing the £8 for 1gb bundle and replacing it with £8 for 30mb would materially affect my decision to sign up to that contract.

Cannot get Tmobile where I live, but would consider 02 and Vodafone.

Presumably though if the shop has written it down, and then they refuse to honour it, I am not tied to that contract and can walk away?

Just spken to Orange (retentions actually) and although I can get a TYTN II for free on the tariff I want, they cannot extend/renew the OWU bundle that will expire in February.

So I am stuck I guess. Either accept the 30Mb for £8 plus the unlimited off peak data or jump ship.

The OWB is very important to me, probably more important than paying a small fee for the phone, so might try the shop route as discussed by Jimbouk.

PS- anyone know what is likely to happen or what the options are if Orange turn round later and say that the shop should not have agreed that?

Never used that before - but apparently they are having a problem identifying my phone and I should check back ater (don't think that will help)

EDIT - Even tried using the orangewap apn - no luck.

Had to put my Sim in an old Nokia to get this to work. But now I see my Orange bundle expires in March!
D'oh!
