I've been looking at the 8510i too. The problem with it seems to be that a lot of the S60 software out there doesn't run on it yet. It'll probably get fixed but right now...

N85 on the other hand...

the N96 is definitely a contender - apart from the looks! All of the images i have seen for it make it look too flat-fronted if you see what i mean!

if there are any decent hands on images out there, i haven't seen 'em. If the device is actually out when i go shopping in about 10 days time it may get a look in but till then, i'm reading all the early reviews of the 8510i and its looking good...

I think i've come away from the Omnia purely cos of the touchscreen interface - unless someone can convince me that the screen keyboard is a winner...

Take a look at the Nokia N85 which is due out next month. All the functions as the N95 but better design, better battery, and better screen, all in a smaller slimmer case.

I just got an E51 for the GF, so that I could see what Nokia, MfE and Symbian are up to these days. It's a very nice handset, not sure about the OS (but I only played for an hour or so), and MfE setup was not "obvious" (but then, I only played for an hour or so!)
Chucky, You should be able to install the client from the "Downloads" application, which is an on-device software store. Alternatively you go here http://www.businesssoftware.nokia.com/mail...e_downloads.php and the download will be self explanitory. Once you have the software you will have to run Mail For Exchange and create a profile. This should be very similar to what you're used to on WinMob. I hope this helps, Xerxes

Do the Nokias do Exchange Push email? How is the web browsing?

In case anyone is still interested, Nokia provides a free download called Mail For Exchange which is an Exchange Activesync client. It works perfectly, exactly the same performance as the built in Activesync on my XDA Exec, except that it only syncs your default folders; Inbox, Drafts etc, not sub folders. It is also worth pointing out that this free download is only free if you use an E-Series or one of a small number of N-Series. The N73 and N95 can download it for free so I expect that the N82 can as well.

If Mail For Exchange doesn't provide enough functionality or isn't available for the phone you choose there is another alternative called Roadsync. Roadsync provides full sync capability (any folder etc) and is available for just about any Symbian S60 phone but I think it costs about $50 so I haven't bothered to try it out as Mail For Exchange is quite adequate for me.

No, unlimited means it has no data limit (you've always been able to browse whatever you like). It's fair use, not a limit, so you'll just get a warning or something if you keep going over 500mb, instead of being hit with a charge.

@Woogle,

Do you know that for a fact or is it a supposition?

Vodafone has always referred to "Fair Usage" an "Unlimited Browsing" on their previous bundles but it hasn't stopped them charging for every Kb over their unlimited limit in the past.

Actually I thought it was pretty good value considering it was a full debrand and got rid of all the 3 junk as well as unlocking.

Hi, I am thinking of jumping from WM to the N82. The big thing for me for WM is the ability to sync my Outlook calendar correctly. I use it to keep track of my meetings and need it to be 100% reliable. I had a SE K790 a couple of years ago and had to get rid of it because it wouldn't sync recurring meetings correctly. Specifically, if you changed just one instance of a recurring meeting and not the whole series, that wouldn't show up correctly. I don't really know anything about Symbian or S60 so I don't know if the N82 will have a similar problem. Have you tried this with the N82? The N82 has everything I want, especially the camera but the calendar thing is a deal breaker for me. Hopefully this isn't a problem. Appreciate your thoughts. Thanks!

I moved from Windows Mobile to S60 (N73 then N95) about 2 years ago. I have never had a problem with syncing via PC Suite. All the info gets synced correctly and I am a VERY heavy PIM user (agenda, contacts, notes and tasks).

I would say the built in PIM functions on S60 are roughly equivalent to those on WM Smartphone, but not as fully functional as those on WM PPC. If you want more agenda functionality take a look at Handy Calendar from Epocware. It's very similar to Papyrus on WM Smartphone.

I would say S60 is not quite as strong as WM Smartphone in terms of PIM functions but it is miles ahead when it comes to actual phone use. Signal strength, voice quality, Bluetooth, voice recognition, and texting (particularly in T9) are all much better with the Nokias than with any WM phone I have used (and I have tried out 6 or 7).

I'd like to unlock my Sony Ericsson K800i from T-Mobile and I'd appreciate if someone could give me some information/attachment to a free good website/program, please! smile.gif unsure.gif

I don't think you can get it done for free. There are plenty of commercial websites that offer an unlock code but they seem to mainly be based in Russia or the like. I got my wife's K800i unlocked and debranded from 3 to generic Sony Ericsson for £15 at a local "independent phone retailer" in Richmond.

QUOTE(ewankosau @ Jun 5 2007, 09:11) *
im currently pondering on w/c phone to buy to replace my old 6680.. im trying to choose from n73 n70 n95 on nokia phones. and k810i, w880 on SE and D900i u600 u700 on samasung.. which do you is best to choose.
these are the major things i look for a phone
>good camera not lower than 2mega
>camera flash
>good video (i hate sluggish)
>not sluggish in terms of applications or simply ease of use
>nice screen resolution
>small thin as possibly can (they say n95 is bulky)
>i can custom install themes and apps
>good replacement for an ipod or mp3 player
>good ergonomics (i have tiny hands)
>can be put in may pocket without having slides go haywire and open just that easily in my pocket
>good loudspeaker
>long talk time (i talk alot over the phone)
>has a good handsfree (unlike my 6680 popport always comes off after some time of use and start to get loose)
>if uses slide-up w/c choice is less to wooble.
>can support large memory 2G i hope. to store music
>nice multimedia functions
>a radio wud be nice.
>i dont care much bout wifi 3g or internet browsing at all.

i think to sum it up., a phone that i can use to make alot of calls take good pictures even at night or dark places, i can takeup my music on the go, good speakers and mic. can play my favorite music videos large screen that can be landscaped bout 2.1 - 2.6".. and easy on the pocket (w/o unwanted apps to suddenly open)

im having thoughts of buying n73 though i like all the features of n95 just like a PC but alot of reviews said its faulty sluggish and cheap material. so is it wise to got n73 or n95 if not then which from SE or Samsung is the best choice?

all opinions and self experieces are welcome and thank you. hope some can light up my dilemma

Hi,

I have both the N73 and N95. Both have their advantages and disadvantages.

The N73 is marginally slimmer and has better battery life. Also the sliding camera cover has never opened in my pocket.
The camera is very good outdoors. It's pretty good inside but the flash can make the pictures appear a bit yellow.
The music sound quality is great but the phone uses the wobbly Nokia pop port for the headphone connection so you can get some crackles and drop out.
The expansion slot takes mini-SD up to 2GB
The Nokia S60 internet browser does a really great job of rendering full websites but you have to use a separate browser for WAP sites or any downloads.

The N95 is slightly thicker (about 1mm) but is actually smaller and lighter in the pocket.
The slider is not as good quality as it should be given how expensive the phone is but it is nowhere near as bad as some websites make out. The slide can open in your pocket sometimes.
The interface speed on the N95 is very good. It's not sluggish at all. (I am using the version 11 firmware).
The camera is phenominal for phone camera!
The video camera is actually better quality than my Samsung video camera!
The music quality is about the same as the N73 but the phone uses a standard 3.5mm headphone jack.
The 3.5mm jack also allows sound and video to be output to a TV - which is great for showing off the videos I have taken with the N95
The micro SDHC slot takes 4GB cards apparently (I haven't bought one yet so I haven't tried) so there's plenty of space for music and videos.
The internet browser renders all websites and handles all downloads
N95 has both wifi and HSDPA for high speed music, video or podcast downloads.

I hope this helps.

Dashnoob

In the US you can currently only get an N95 from a Nokia store, from an overseas importer such as Expansys (but Expansys prices are ridiculous) or from an auction site.

eBay shows them going for between $600 and $700 which is about what I paid for mine on current exchange rates. I don't believe you can currently get an N95 on contract in the USA.

If you dare trust them (they are I suppose owned by the CPW now at least), try www.onestopphoneshop.co.uk as they were MEANT to be doing the N95 on Orange's Dolphin £35 tariff, with the phone only £14.99

That's fairly cheap, but again, it's ALWAYS likely to be an 18 month contract for this phone mind - after all, it's still £549.99 to buy sim free...

I got mine sim free (well actually an unlocked Vodafone) for £350 on wednesday. Cool phone. I'm posting from it now. There are a few on ebay for around £300 if you dare. I prefered to say the extra and see the phone in the flesh before i parted with my cash.

By the way, you could use RoadSync as an ActiveSync client for push email. It's supported on the N95 - but it does cost $50.00!

How are people finding the N95 now that you've had it a few weeks?

I'm still using the Treo 650!

I think I'll get the E61i as soon as it appears though.

I'm wondering what to do about GPS though. I have Tom Tom on the Treo with a bluetooth GPS receiver. What's the best thing to use when I sell the Treo? A stand alone Tom Tom or a GPS solution for the E61i?

TomTom 6 runs on the E61 so it should be fine on the E61i. I'm using it on the N73 with no problems but I think it would be better with the E61i's bigger screen.

I don't know how urgently you need to change phones but you might want to think about waiting for the E90, due out in September. It will have an 800x352 screen, a full qwerty keyboard, a built in GPS and a 3Mpx camera. It has a clam shell form factor with a full Series 60 phone on the cover when closed.

The GPS isn't perfect.. it takes a while to lock, but once it has, its fine - its also, (as you'd expect) *MUCH* quicker if you're not moving when obtaining the signal. My bluetooth GPS takes about 15 - 45 seconds to lock, but the phone seems to take about a minute, maybe more.

I got MailForExchange 1.5 yesterday but was told only E series could use it, i got the 1.3.1 build (by guessing the url, which is: http://www.businesssoftware.nokia.com/mail...nge(1.3.1).SISX for anyone whos googling/searching for this too!) - Ill try it now smile.gif

Edit: MailForExchange fails: I get a 'Function not implemented' error when trying to open email, but it does sync contacts.. which along with IMAP will do, pretty much - I wish nokia would release MailForExchange as a paid service for N Series users (i know they have to pay a license to Microsoft, so theres no point giving it to every N Series phone!)

Edit2: Orange retentions offered me the phone for £19.99 - but i'm afraid its worth the extra money for Web n' Walk!

I think you'll notice much more if you use an Exchange server.. I do, and i miss automatic contact syncing over-the-air, but having to plug it into the pc every day isn't the end of the world - I'm using IMAP, and obviously email is pull, not push, but again: Push email was cool.. but i very rarely used it, only to manually check for email when i'm out, and if i really need it, i can just have the N95 happily hop on to Web n Walk and automatically update every 5 minutes or something, push email was very much a novelty tongue.gif

The pictures are amazing on it (just look at all the pictures its taken on flickr: http://www.flickr.com/cameras/nokia/n95/). The GPS Maps are brilliant - useless indoors like you'd expect, but not having to carry around a bluetooth GPS now will save me a lot of effort.

I had a C600 before, its a year old, and despite me recently going back to the factory firmware and settings, i often miss calls because it doesn't register the fact i've told it to pick up the call.. the n95 is so fast and responsive, everything you want done is just.. instant.

There really is nothing i could fault with it. I read one review about it which said the slider was a bit loose and rattled: Mine doesn't. I read another review which talks about battery life.. Mine has been on for 16 hours or so now, with bluetooth and establishing a wifi connection when it needs it for podcasts or something, and the bar hasn't even gone down 1 notch!

Couldn't be happier smile.gif

RazorD,

Try downloading and installing Mail For Exchange (free download from Nokia). It's basically an over-the-air Activesync client. I am using version 1.3 on my N73 for receiving push email, calendar and contact updates from the mail2web exchange server.

Try to find version 1.3 though. I heard a rumour that version 1.5 has been locked down to only work with E Series Nokias.

Can you give us any feedback on how the GPS performs? I'm currently using TomTom on my N73 and it works perfectly but I'd really like something with a GPS built in.
