Have you by any chance got syncing with an Exchange account setup ?

There have been some reported issues of the syncing "constantly on" on exchange accounts, which would be particularly battery unfriendly. The posts I've seen about this suggest you delete the Exchange account and recreate it and all should be happiness and light again.
Not having run into the problem myself (I do sync with Exchange but only calendar and contacts), can't say if this advice is bogus or not, but HTH.

Thanks for the reply but no, I don't use Exchange at all.
Push email is turned off, so is bluetooth and I rarely use the location services.

Wifi is always on as is 3g. I manually fetch email.

I charge last thing at night and phone is in standby over night. By morning three is a noticable reduction on remaini g battery with 2.2, but a full bar was with 2.1.

I find I'm charging more frequent with this new firmware

Luckily I have transferred over to the dark side and joined O2 midway through my tmobile contract, so i actually have an official iPhone 3G on the O2 network now, but if you are using a Turbo sim (as I was) to unlock your iphone, when you upgrade to Firmware 2.2 your phone will display NO SERVICE when you put in your sim card with the unlock sim.

Was scratching my head wondering why it wasnt working until I checked out google and viewed the news about it.

There are currently some new unlock sim cards available on ebay for about £19.99 to solve this and there are some software unlock methods apparently out there but just thought id let you know.

Hope this info helps some of you out.

How's your battery life now Tom with 2.2?

Mine really sucks now. It was great with 2.1, but not with 2.2

I don't use Push email or Exchange, but I'll provide my experience with Synching.

iPhone and iTunes synching with Outlook, I've had no end of trouble.

1. I had to purchase Outlook 2003, as my 2002 version that came with some of my old Windows Mobile devices just didn't work with the iPhone
2. It doesn't just work, well not for me anyway, after a many days experiencing software hangs synching Contacts, killing Outlook and AppleDeviceManager processes, it suddenly just started working, no idea why, and has been synching ever since. Perhaps it was the later version of iTunes that did it. God knows
3. I can no longer Hibernate my laptop, and 5 times out of ten, can't shut it down either. This is because of the connection between iTunes and Outlook which never seems to die, even after exiting Outlook and iTunes, and disconnecting the phone. There's always a rogue process there that either slows my laptop down to a near halt or prevents it from shutting down - If I don't load iTunes, it's shuts down and hibernate fine.

Nokia and PC Suit
e synching with Outlook - Where do I start?
Atfer numerous posts on the Nokia Support Discussions pages, I still never got to the bottom of it. Synching either wiped both my phone, and Outlook Contacts list, or adding duplicates/triplicates in both of them

WM and ActiveSync
, yes, it had it's issues, but compared to the above, it was far more stable.

After years building up Contacts, Bookmarks, and Calendar entries on Outlook I need a device that can use all that data.
Numerous WM devices have managed to inherit all that data fine (a few hiccups, but nothing too major), but as soon as I moved away from Windows Mobile , my synching problems began and are still haunting me.

You can do more with your device using iTunes than you could with ActiveSync, but I take back all I said about ActiveSync. With the amount of different WM devices out there, it does a damn good job.

Yes, I'm with you two. Definitely the best phone I've had so far, and there's been a few.

Very happy with the games, Asphalt 4, Virtual Pool Mobile, Super Monkey Ball to name but a few. Brilliant!!

I definitely agree with the iPlayer (BBC) works brilliantly, as does playing of mp4 movies.

I miss Sat Nav and Copy and Paste too, it'll come soon, they have to. I just hope Apple don't try ban other Sat Nav software and try and add something to Google Maps, which would be a real shame. Having to download all the maps as you go is a real pain.

Firmware 2.2 is rumoured to include the ability for turn-by-turn navigation, so I really hope the likes of TomTom and Garmin release something soon after.
It was supposed to be in 2.1, but bug fixes took priority.
When it's due out is anyone's guess, anyone know?

I do find myself checking Google News for any firmware update news or iPhone Sat Nav gossip
Built-in GPS was what I wanted on the iPhone, and now I got it, I really want to make the most of it biggrin.gif

Thanks for the link paholman - hadn't found that one.

Here's another useful one: http://www.iclarified.com
Their Tutorials are very useful, especially the jailbreak ones: http://www.iclarified.com/tutorials/iphone/index.php

Also added links to "Recovery Mode" and "DFU mode" in my previous post

If I jailbroke my phone and then a new firmware update came out how would you plan for this? Could i just install the firmware update then hope a jail break is available for the new firmware? Would all the apps stop working that were installed? Would I have to install all the apps again?

There are two choices really, provided your phone is already activated

1. Wait for the jailbreak of that new firmware to become available, and follow the advice given by the Dev team

2. Upgrade/Restore to latest firmware. Depending on what that firmware does, it would likely close access to your 3rd party apps that are on there, and that space would not be accessible until you jailbreak again

Jailbreaking these days involves a restore of the new firmware and it's advisable to remove existing unofficial 3rd party Apps to ensure a successful firmware upgrade. Then re-install them again after the jailbreak

As a side note, there's a lot of widespread talk about "bricking" which is a term that's used far too widespread these days, even if someone has a failed install, or failed jailbreak and they say it's "bricked" when it's actually not. The iPhone definition of "bricked" appears to relate to "not booting" as opposed to "completely inoperable". The more people incorrectly use this term, the more fear it puts into people. The actual term means the phone is completely unusable and cannot be restored no matter what, leaving a useless device or a "brick". There's not many actual reports of those actual "bricked" iPhones. Many people can put the iphone into "Recovery mode" or "DFU mode" and do an iTunes restore/re-install of the firmware to get it working again. A failed jailbreak happened to me twice, and after my phone wouldn't boot at all. After an outburst of 4 letter words, I managed to do a restore using iTunes, and it worked again.

On saying this, some unofficial programs/applications can modify the bootloader or baseband which can actually "brick" your phone if it goes wrong, and will leave your device completely usuable. These programs have been used previously to "software unlock" the 1st gen iphones. As Confucious says, there is no software unlock available for the iPhone 3G yet.

I'm not saying hacking your phone is not without it's problems, it's the same as the Windows Mobile cooked ROMs etc, you jailbreak your phone at your own risk and you void your warranty if you do so .

Personally, since AppStore, I've not jailbroken my 3G iPhone on the latest firmware, although I did on 2.0 and also my 1st gen one. I removed the unoffical Applications, did a restore to the latest firmware upgrade, and it's been working fine as an official Apps locked phone. I'm on an official iPhone tariff so cannot say for sure if this will work for those phone activated during the jailbreak process.

The temptation for me to jailbreak again is there because of the MMS (Swirly MMS) and Video Recorder Apps (Cycorder) but so far I've resisted. I've survived this far without them.

Firmware updates have been pretty frequent in the last few months, and their purpose was to fix serious performance issues and bugs. Those updates are something I'd personally want on my phone straightaway, not something I'd be prepared to rely on someone hacking before I apply them.

Just my opinion though rolleyes.gif

I don't intend to send Modaco/Mobihlic users elsewhere but the Forum at http://www.modmyi.com is where the serious iphone developers and jailbreakers go, so you could get some re-assurance from those guys.

Have you tried GPS? Mine worked fine on O2 but doesn't seem to work on T-Mobile.

Just a thought, but the GPS is A-GPS, so perhaps it needs network GPRS/3G access before it can pin point your exact position via the GPS chip.
If you're swapping SIM cards, then you'll need to re-enter your GPRS/3G network settings if using a non-iphone contract SIM.

Settings → General → Network → EDGE

Note: The EDGE settings option only appears if you enter a different SIM card that not an official iphone carrier.

Worth a try

Hi there, don't worry, there's nothing wrong with your iPhone.
The right speaker is actually not a speaker, it's the microphone rolleyes.gif

I read O2 and Orange quashed rumours about Orange UK selling the iPhone.

See here: Orange Rumours quaashed

Hi Confucious, Similarly, I posted another link over a week ago, that confirmed these are just rumours about Orange, and both providers have admitted there's no truth in it.

Orange always had a better signal in my area, but their 3G/HSPDA coverage is non-existent where I live.
O2 seem to have the better HSPDA coverage anyway in the UK, so if I had the choice, I go with O2.

Any bit of gossip about the iPhone in Google is repeated globally by every Tom, Dick and Harry, whether it's true or not.
The same about Apple's ability to remotely remove Apps on the iPhone. It's everywhere, but it turns out it's just not true, and someone got the wrong end of the stick. It just happens to spread like wild fire.

I agree with the concept of this feature but it should be made clear to all iPhone users whhen they connect to the AppStore. It's the same principle as a Product Recall so a user should have the option whether to enable or disable this feature and also if any app was removed/recalled, all buyers should get a full refund.

Yes, me too.

The only issue I have is with Jabber, My company uses a different port, and there's no current method to set a different port so I can't use jabber yet.
AIM works fine for me, just waiting for the enhancements as mentioned above

Apologies about the spelling of your name Confucious biggrin.gif

I think the iPhone needs to be jailbroken to use these, and so far the only one confirmed to have worked is this one: http://www.unlock-iphone3g.com/

The one confirmed to work with the 1st gen iPhone was TurboSIM: http://www.bladox.com/shop.php?lang=en

QUOTE(Metoo @ Jul 31 2008, 00:39) *
You forget the whole section of Steve Job's keynote and the iPhone website devoted to how the full Exchange support in v2.0 meant it was "Enterprise Ready".

Except that turned out to be half-assed too. E.g.:-

No Tasks or Notes sync with Exchange or PC Outlook.
No way to add people to a meeting or give a reason for declining a meeting.
No way to add people from a Global Address List to local contacts.
No way for 3rd party apps (e.g. Pocket Informant) to access the built in Calendar (or ToDo list, cos there isn't one).
No way to sync 3rd party app data to a PC except via 3rd party servers (PI) or open WiFi (SplashID)

etc..etc..

Yes, although that is more like a list of why the new iphone 2.0 software sucks, not the "new iphone 3G", it is another thing, besides GPS that was promised by Apple and turned out to be only half true.

The only thing I'm really disappointed with so far with the actual 3G iphone is the GPS. Currently it can't be used for turn-by-turn navigation which is what everyone expects from a GPS enabled device. I feel a little cheated by this as currently it's next to useless apart from some "locate shops/bars/etc near my current location" software. I just hope navigation software is allowed/released soon.

I thought the topic is about "the new iphone" i.e the actual device. The majority of the list in the original post were not promised to be in the new released firmware. The disappointment is caused by the all the rumours spread around the web of what people "expect to see", or "hoped to be" in the next release, but they're only rumours, and are never true, unless Apple officially announce it. This raises people's expectations and causes disappointment.

If it's not announced by Apple, it's not official, and "copy & paste", "a better camera" etc was not announced by Apple to be in the new device or new firmware.

There are bugs in the new firmware 2.0, and MobileMe is a joke. It's early days, and firmware updates are released by Apple when they fix these issues.
Firmware updates such as these very rarely seen on Windows Mobile devices, unless you've got the right device.

The lock down on 3rd Party Apps at the moment sucks. Applications can't interact with each other because you can't have more than one Application running, nor have any background processes. This is bound to change in the future.

The title of this topic is misleading, and as Confusions says, it looks like it was written by a 6 year old.
It should be "seven reasons why I'm disappointed"

As I said above, the only major differences in hardware between the original iphone and iphone 3G is built-in GPS and 3g/HSPDA, and they were the only things announced by Apple as improvements.

The rest of the changes come with the v2.0 of the firmware, Exchange Support, AppStore etc

So out of the 7 things listed in the original post for reasons why the "new iphone" sucks, only one of them actually relate to the 3G iphone itself:-

- Can't use the GPS like a GPS (no, not yet because no turn-by-turn navigation software is currently available)

Others relate to the software only, are no different from the old phone or were not announced by Apple to come with the new 3G iphone or 2.0 firmware:-

- no copy and paste
- no flash support
- can't use 3G iphone to laptop as modem
- stereo bluetooth
- Wimpy camera

I'm guessing the majority would be address by software updates when and where possible, it is still early days.

The final one, is mainly aimed at the U.S:-

- too expensive to own

This may differ per country, but O2's tariff in the UK has not changed, and the 3G iphone handset is £169 cheaper on the £35 per month tariff than the original one was.
AT&T are cheeky and greedy to add an additional 3G charge to their iphone tariffs, but I guess this is only because 3G is relatively new over the pond at the moment. Countries that have had the 3G service for a while, will not expect a higher tariff.

Although you can't officially get one SIM free, you can be lucky to get one from eBay and use WinPwn software to activate it and jailbreak it. Then you can avoid a long term contract, and use a PAYG sim or other SIM from an official iphone carrier, such as O2. A software SIM unlock is still not yet available for the 3G iPhone, only a YESSIM adaptor can unlock it : http://www.unlock-iphone3g.com/

As for the other stuff
- Exchange support etc will be fixed with firmware updates
- Video recording will come with 3rd party software
- Copy and Paste will come soon
- Video streaming works great at the moment in the UK with BBC iPlayer
- Flash support with come
- MMS, ok, works with jailbroken phones only via SwirlyMMS and as it uses background processes will not be allowed on the AppStore. But MMS can be expensive depending on the network. You can send pictures via email.

It's early days, but as with the 1st iphone, firmware updates will iron out those little glitches, and software available via AppStore will improve it dramatically.
