QUOTE(pd.ryder @ Dec 1 2008, 18:59) *
Mono - I'm on W&W standard and definately get HSDPA speeds. Mind you, I get IM connection and laptop bluetooth modem too so I'm not complaining.

Another reason I'm in no rush to 'renew' my contract wink.gif

It's only early WnW standard customers who have HSDPA available. My contract started nearly a year ago and I definitely did not have that lovely little H on the top of my screen (as per the Ts n Cs), upgraded to WnW Pro and that sorted it!

Paul is correct over the frequencies (assuming equal basestation placement and transmitting power), there is also further granularisation when you take 3G into account too. Personally, coming from 3 I've found T-Mobiles coverage horribly patchy, and also suffer from 3-4 bars HSDPA to 1 bar/no signal GSM only at the windows once inside (seriously I swear my flat has lead lined walls, even going into the next room to the router, sitting on the other side of the wall, is enough to drain 1/2-1/3 of the signal power)!

I've tried SIMs from all the top 4 carriers inside and confirmed the penetration levels too. O and TMob are next to useless, O2 give me a few bars consistently (with EDGE!), ditto Voda. I'll be going to O2 later in the month. T-Mobile not providing HSDPA on WnW standard is inexcusable imho...

I think the ROM cooking community is what's driving the Omnia's online popularity. Obviously the iPhone similarities and marketing push have helped with the devices penetration into the customer-base, but those more technically orientated owners who have come online for more info, help and options for getting the most out of their device have found several havens of information in our communities.

I'd say it works both ways, and came together nicely for Samsung with the Omnia!

It kinda got put on the back-burner for a variety of reasons, mostly more pressing stuff that needed doing over the experiment! It's probably worth giving Paul a poke regarding it though, as we had all the necessary kit and packaging ready and all that was needed was a small app to periodically poll the GPS receiver and upload the location! The battery life issue would be worked around by using GSM only and hooking the device up to an external battery pack, that should in theory give a good 3-6 days standby (GPS access aside, of course).

Hmm, well the vobs are the raw video streams from the dvd, that includes everything from the film itself to the menu backgrounds and transitions etc. Normally you'd convert the .vob files to avi's using DVD re-encoding software which allows you to select the correct audio stream! (eg English). Off the top of my head I don't know of any, but there will certainly be plenty within a google or two wink.gif Other than that I think DVD apps like WinDVD can play the actual vobs...

That's pretty awful, they out right admit wifi won't work? Wonder how many people will fall for that one! Not many RJ45 jacks in Starbucks wink.gif You'd have hoped for a little more than 3hrs standby on such a low-power device too...

OK it will work fine. When you set a static IP did you also set the default gateway and DNS servers on your EEE?
